Who is your favorite real-life genius? Why?
The late poet Mary Oliver. Her poems are notably unadorned in their language and cadence and accessible to everyone, yet every verse is rich with contemplation and insight. She was a devout disciple of nature and had a mischievous sense of humor. Her work is a testimony to the delight and wisdom that comes with spending time with nature and its inhabitants, whose voices she often used to harpoon the habits and concerns of humans.
Tell us about a place you visited and something you loved about it.
Monhegan Island, Maine. It's 10 miles off the coast, only a mile wide and two miles long, and the ferry ride there is a Dramamine-fueled adventure on a fair day. It’s been an artists' colony since the mid-19th century, beginning with painters of the Hudson River School and later artists like Robert Henri, Edward Hopper, and Andrew Wyeth. And it’s hard not to love a place that inspired so many works of art. I think part of the allure is how foreign the cold and rugged North Atlantic coast is to the flat, endless landscape of the Mississippi Delta, where I was born and raised.
What is the single greatest creative work you’ve ever experienced?
Every Cirque du Soleil show I've seen qualifies, but “Alegria” holds a special place in my heart because it was my first. I was 23 years old, and that performance filled me with child-like wonder.
